Today it’s Shrooms!
Here we are another day and another solution! Today it’s the Mushrooms… or if you are Cool, Hip, or whatever today’s word is Shrooms!
Mushrooms have always had a mystic about them. The Magic Mushroom, but I’m looking at the beneficial side of them for our struggling brains.
So I’ll start and look at what the BBC GoodFood has to say about mushrooms. They say there are four main health benefits of mushrooms.
- They can support the immune system because they contain B Vitamins and Selenium.
- They are a good source of Vitamin D.
- May help protect against cancer. The critical word here is, May!
There is a sentence here that is interesting; ‘There is also some evidence that they may be beneficial in the treatment and management of neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s’. Frustratingly, as more often than not is the case, nothing more is said.
4. May help maintain heart health.
Here is that word again; May!
That’s it as far as this article goes.
I went and had a look at some of the the more off the wall stuff. Youtube and a man that looks like he has had an accident with a car pump that has made his muscles abnormally bulge while wearing a shirt that is four sizes too small, tells us…. Mushrooms preserve brain health and directly focuses on how mushrooms will help dementia symptoms. Maybe!
There are lots of mushroom types, and I read this about one particular type called the Reishi Mushroom. It states that certain compounds of reishi mushroom are responsible for possible anticancer and immunostimulatory effects. Reishi may also provide hepatoprotective action, antiviral activity, and beneficial impact on the cardiovascular system, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and diabetes. It then ends by stating, ‘few clinical trials have been conducted.’
This is the problem with these developing ideas; they are developing and certainly not proven.
I’m like most that are desperate to find anything that will help beat the monster Dementia. These one-hit-wonders that seems to keep popping up are so comfortable at getting us hooked.
What I’ve found is that most are based on some research, that gives some possible benefits, that provides us with some, maybes, but most of what we are told is anecdotal and speculative.
When something is found and proven, I would imagine the world would hear about it Globally and not by having to search online.
Mushrooms are amazing, I eat them all the time, but that’s because I like mushrooms, not because it may do my brain some good. If there are benefits to my brain, then that is a bonus!
Mushrooms and the mycelium world is fascinating and often mind-blowing, but I’m not talking about the nootropic, hallucinogenic effect of some mushrooms.
So, should I stuff my face with mushrooms, or buy those ever-growing array of expensive mushroom extract tablets? Well really that’s up to you, but for me, certainly not.
As a part of my diet, great! As a part of some singular answer to our dreams of being dementia-free, it has some way to go.
For now, enjoy your shrooms.
