Music’s Magical Gift!

Click and listen as you read along… or just listen!

This morning I watched an amazing story on the BBC Breakfast Show about music therapy and its impact on those suffering from Dementia symptoms.

The story was about John, who has Vascular Dementia.

Dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language and many more.

Vascular describes the cause of the dementia. Vascular dementia is caused by the reduced blood supply to the brain due to diseased blood vessels.

Back to his story; John moved into a care home in 2017. He was very frail, very unwell, suffering extreme anxiety and given three months to live.

The care facility used music therapy, and the band that is involved worked with John. He was given his own guitar, which he plays in his own unique and fantastic way.

This doesn’t sound that remarkable, you may be thinking, that’s nice, but the life-changing effect on John’s life is fantastic!

This is what the care provider had to say about John now.

‘John is the centre of attention; he is a fun person to be around! Four years on, with many more years to come!’

Music gave John hope, something he thought and had been told had gone. Music changed and brought John’s life back!

Music has magical properties! It has been shown in research that only music stimulates and lights up every part of the brain!

So, my message is, let music into your life. Find the music that stirs you; listen, play, dance, sing, and you will see the world start to shine too!
